Unfortunately, research suggests that the years since 2010 have not been good ones for mental health, happiness, and well-being among Americans. Even as the United States economy improved after the end of the Great Recession in 2009, happiness among adults did not rebound to the higher levels of the 1990s, continuing a slow decline ongoing since at least 2000. In addition, numerous indicators of low psychological well-being such as depression, suicidal ideation, and self-harm increased sharply.

This decline in mental health and happiness seems paradoxical. By most accounts, Americans should be happier now than ever. The violent crime rate is low, as is the unemployment rate. Income per capita has steadily grown over the last few decades. This is the Easterlin paradox: As the standard of living improves, so should happiness – but it has not.

Unfortunately America is not the only country struggling with mental health, happiness, and well-being.

Overall mental health, well-being, and morale of your staff is important because employee turnover might cost you a lot of money. A study has shown the hidden costs of turnover and it is quite shocking. In the US, when an employee quits, employers spend 50 to 60 percent of the employee’s annual salary to replace them, while the SHRM (The world’s largest HR association and leading advocate for HR professionals) reports that the actual, total costs associated with individual turnovers can range from 90 to 200 percent of the employee’s annual salary. This is a big hit to take for any employer. The churn and burn has a massive effect on team culture and the business bottom line.

However, there are ways that employers can improve overall mental health, happiness, and well-being of employees, and employee retention, by providing their employees with the right training and tools. Forward-thinking employers have come to realize the important role of training and tools. Employers that are focused on training and tools to boost well-being and morale of their employees, means that they are serious about retaining employees, and will have an added competitive advantage for recruiting. It demonstrates leadership investment in the personal progression and value of their employees.

I think employers can actually do a lot to retain their best and brightest people if they are prepared to think outside the box about their approach. Employers really need to understand that the priorities of your employees have far more to do with mental health and working in a supportive and collaborative culture than they do with remuneration, bonuses and all of the other stuff.

Because research suggests that mental health, happiness, and well-being is declining, and that employers see a high turnover rate because of it, I’m actively trying to disrupt this down trend worldwide by providing workshops and introducing the Egomute Method™.
